    • Was ist Caretakers Beach?

    • Hausmeister Strand.

    • Genius. :)

France as “Strike” cracks me up, but what does “Piefke” mean?

    • Dear Anthoy,

Piefke is a very spezial word for our favourite neighbours, the Germans;)

Maybe you will visit Germany in one day. I recommend, don´t say it to them!!

      cheers

      Sascha

    • Sascha,

Hah! Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. :)

    • @Nattl: Aso – dachte bei caretaker an Pfleger.

@Anthony: Just out of curiosity: You understand what “Island of the beatified” means?

    • @Michael:

“Beatified” in general, yes, but the Austria-specific reference escapes me.

    • @Anthony: It is a reference to a quote of Pope Paul VI who called Austria a “isola felice” (island of the happy). The meaning is, that all the bad stuff happening around Austria is not affecting Austria at all. Nowadays used almost entirely in a negative sense (i.e. some politician does nothing about problem X because he thinks Austria is a “isola felice”).

Somehow this got rephrased into “Insel der Seligen” which could be translated as “island of the beatified” or “island of the blessed”.

However it has no religious meaning. I am not sure but I think “beatified” is normally used in a religious context – therefore I was curious what an American thinks, when reading “Island of the beatified”.

    • @Michael:

I half-suspected it meant our hostess was up for sainthood. ;)
